Navigating corporate politics + avoiding accidental career mistakes
Avoid trying to be a 'know-it-all' in meetings
"Be careful with correcting team mates in meetings especially if management is in the room or if there are a lot of people. Instead of chiming in with knowledge or corrections, ask respectful questions without being a smart-ass.
Be courteous — I have found that talking to your team mates in private and asking them questions works best, instead of calling them out in public settings."
Know who's who at a company
"Life in the corporate world is less about what you know and more about who you know. More importantly, who knows you. If you're new to a company, try to know all of the players 'playing the game' in your department first!"
Always be professional in your communication!
This might be obvious, but it's worth emphasizing: No gossiping, and don't put anything crude, vulgar or inappropriate in writing anywhere. These things may seem innocent enough if you know your team, but they can get you fired just as quickly.
Say 'yes' to opportunities with important people
"In my world, proximity is everything. Even mediocre performers garner recognition from senior leadership because they are in the room when decisions are made. Never pass up an opportunity to work as a deputy or assistant to an executive level person."
This topic was a little different to what I usually share, but I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know if it was helpful :)
